Glossary
edema

Just as in Western physiology, the Kidney is said to control the excretion of urine. When the Kidneys are strong, the body fluids are abundant and flow smoothly throughout the body. Constipation and difficult urination, however, may be signs of excessive Kidney fire or of water deficiency. If the Kidneys cannot transform water, urination is weak and the body swells resulting in edema.

Also, the Spleen, as defined in Chinese health theory, is said to be in charge of the transformation and transportation of fluids in the body. If they Spleen is dysfunctional, edema will result. Spleen tonics like Poria, Dioscorea and Atractylodes can help eliminate edema caused by weak Spleen function. In addition, their are certain herbs that have gentle and safe diuretic action: Red Atractylodes and Corn Silk are both excellent.
